Stone Wall Building and Re-pointing.
my time at Traditional Restoration Services in Frome I learnt about
stone masonry and rubble (or random) stone wall building. I attended a
course on the use of lime and am keenly aware of the importance of its
use in traditional buildings. I have built two substantial rubble stone
walls including reconstituted stone pillars at the boundary of my own
garden (see pics below).
do not consider myself sufficiently experienced to take on major
structural wall building projects and my skills are more developed with
respect to re-pointing and re-building small sections of wall. It
should be borne in mind that lime work is limited to the milder months
of the year as any frost during the long setting period of the mortar
will kill off the lime - causing the pointing to fail.
budget constraints apply, garden walls can be re-pointed in a weak
cement mortar. The usual advantages accruing to lime mortar are less
critical in such walls and the practicality and cheapness of cement can
bring considerable savings in labour and material costs.
